parkrun Celebrates The 70th Birthday Of The NHS

Happy 70th NHS From Midlands parkrun

On Saturday 9 June, parkrun will celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS. And we all have reasons to thank this Great British institution.

The NHS and parkrun UK have joined together to mark this important occasion and the Midlands is playing its part with events taking place across the region. Arrow Valley, Cannon Hill, Dudley, the Wammy and Worcester Pitchcroft are just a few of the locations showing their support for the NHS and paying tribute to its hard working staff.

This initiative was launched by Dame Kelly Holmes, herself a keen parkrunner who was a nursing assistant before becoming an Olympic athlete. She has given this parkrun for the NHS a huge ‘thumbs up’ and hopes as many people as possible will join in, walking, jogging or running in a fun and friendly environment. Newcomers are welcome especially NHS staff and medical fancy dress is actively encouraged.

Kettering got the party started last Saturday (2 June) with a record turnout of 505 attendees and over 60 PBs. There were plenty of NHS-themed costumes on display from runners and volunteers who entered into the spirit of things, dressing as doctors, nurses and patients. One volunteer in particular had her arm in a sling as she sorted the tokens, causing people to assume this was a costume whereas the opposite was the case. She had broken her arm prior to the event but still helped out on the day.

Everyone is invited to run, walk or volunteer at their local parkrun, wear fancy dress and wish the NHS a happy 70th. Cake will be allowed as it is a birthday. #NHS70
