Urban Trail's Easter Debut
New Urban Trail event set for Easter Monday debut...
A brand new race promising a completely different running experience is set to make its debut this spring, as the Halifax Urban Trail takes place for the first time on Easter Monday, (6 April). Starting and finishing in Shibden Park, the historic parkland once enjoyed by Anne Lister, the event will offer runners a route of just over 10K that blends trail running with a tour through some of Halifax’s most iconic landmarks.
Organisers describe it as a trail race like no other, with a course that is not officially measured and is designed to challenge rather than produce fast times. Runners will tackle a mix of paths and tracks heading out towards Beacon Hill, climbing steadily before descending into the town centre.
What sets the event apart is what comes next, as participants will run not just past but through a series of well known locations including Shibden Hall, Halifax Minster, The Piece Hall, Borough Market Halifax, Dean Clough Mills and Halifax Town Hall, with some sections of the route passing through spaces not normally open to the public.
Inspired by the popular urban trail races held across France, the idea was brought to Halifax by race director Andrew Bibby after taking part in a similar event in the Breton town of Fougères. The concept of combining running with access to historic buildings and unusual spaces has become hugely popular overseas, and organisers believe it will translate well to Calderdale.
The event is being organised by members of Todmorden Harriers with support from other local clubs, and will operate as a non commercial race under a newly established charity. Funds raised will support Overgate Hospice and its ongoing building project.
