Asda Foundation York 10K

Full marks for York 10K

The Asda Foundation York 10K celebrated a decade in existence in style with over 5200 runners taking part in the anniversary event on Sunday (4 August). It was a fitting turnout for the race, which, since being launched in 2009, has become integral to the city’s sporting calendar.

The streets were alive with colour as runners from across the country turned out to mark 10 years of York 10K. Enthusiastic crowds cheered them around the course that started and finished in Knavesmire Road and included some of the historic city’s landmarks including the Minster and Clifford’s Tower.

In what turned out to be a series of strong times at the top, Leeds City AC’s Graham Rush proved to be the quickest, crossing the line first in 31:20. Cameron Strachan (31:51) grabbed second while Kristian Watson of Heanor RC was third in 32:55.

It was Rush’s clubmate, Lorna Young, who led the female competition home with a winning time of 36:14, a sizeable margin ahead of Sarah Hunter (38:51) and Georgina Weston (39:19) who were second and third respectively.

Organised by Run For All, York 10K forms part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson who raised nearly £2m for charity by undertaking a series of endurance challenges, despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Many entrants were running in aid of the 10K’s partner charities which are the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, Candlelighters, York Mind, Martin House Children’s Hospice, St Leonard’s Hospice, York Against Cancer, The Island, Changing Lives and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Tristan Batley-Kyle, Run For All’s head of events, said: “Over the past 10 years York 10K has grown into one of the highlights of our season and a big thank you goes to everyone – runners, spectators, volunteers, partner charities and sponsors – who have contributed to its success.”
