Virtual run launched to help Ashton kick out bone cancer
The event aims to help the talented youngster get back in goal.
A new virtual run has been launched on behalf of 12 year old Ashton Hulme who has a rare form of bone cancer and needs a lifelong prosthetic leg. Back Between the Sticks invites people to run 2K, 5K or 10K in July and enable this young man to return to the game he’s passionate about.
Ashton Hulme is an Academy goalkeeper at Crewe Alexandra FC and a Stoke City fan who also enjoys cricket and many other sports. Well liked and with an engaging personality, his life changed at the end of last year when he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma – a rare cancer that has affected his lower leg requiring surgery and chemotherapy. He has since undergone a below the knee amputation and will need a prosthetic leg that has to be maintained and replaced at intervals throughout the rest of his life.
His family and friends have set themselves a fundraising target of £300,000 to pay for this and the rehabilitation to ensure Ashton has full mobility and can play sports again.
Back Between the Sticks has been designed to support this exceptional youngster. Participants run or walk their chosen distance between 26-29 July, upload their finish time and receive a certificate, a bright yellow technical t-shirt and a ‘thank you’ in return.
Note: the distance can be broken down into several smaller runs or walks instead of being completed in one go.
A good number of runners from local clubs have already signed up.
