Do You Dare Take On The Doko Challenge?
The Doko Challenge heads north for the first time with a new Leeds event...
If you're looking for a challenge that is a little different, how about carrying a Doko basket for the duration of a 5K race? Not sure what a Doko basket is? Read on...
Following two highly successful Doko Challenge South events, The Gurkha Welfare Trust is heading north and bringing their famous event to Roundhay Park in Leeds on 4 June this year.
This unique event sees participants running in the footsteps of the ‘Bravest of the Brave’. Based on a pivotal part of the Gurkha selection process, those taking part are challenged to take on an undulating 5K cross-country course with a weighted Nepali Doko basket strapped to their back.
Runners can choose for their Doko basket to weigh 5kg, 10kg or 15kg, and can run, jog, or walk the route. Those looking to push themselves can aim to beat the Gurkha recruitment time of 46 minutes! If this sounds like your thing, then enter quickly as organisers say: "Places are sure to be in demand and competition will be fierce!"
When you sign up you will be assigned a Doko basket for the race, complete with your chosen weight. Don’t worry, Gurkhas will be on hand to make sure it is fitted correctly! The race is chip timed and offers a fully signposted, 5K cross-country course.
There will of course be an all-important finishers medal as well as a goodie bag, complete with an exclusive GWT Doko Challenge T-shirt. But this is an event that offers so much more than post-race treats! Alongside keeping fit and challenging yourself, you can take great pride in raising money to support the charity's team in Nepal, keeping Gurkha veterans and widows safe and giving them the means to live with dignity.
