Charity of the Week

Doctors for Nepal runner Effie is a happy finisher at Brighton Half

Doctors For Nepal Want You To Join Them In Brighton In 2018

Imagine having the worst fever ever, then walking for nine days over some of the highest mountains in the world to reach the nearest health post. And what if there’s no doctor to treat you when you arrive? Then imagine walking nine days to get back home again. People in the remotest parts of Nepal do this whenever they need urgent medical care - pregnant women are carried on husbands’ backs, small children walk for days.

Doctors for Nepal is a UK registered charity set up in 2012 by UK Consultant Dr Kate Yarrow, after she spent a year working in a remote region of western Nepal for the international aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières.

The charity helps to improve healthcare in rural Nepal by providing scholarships to under-privileged medical and nursing students from impoverished backgrounds, supporting them while working in isolated rural Nepal after graduation and funding their further training. Once qualified, the students are contracted to return to a rural region of Nepal for between two and four years, to provide vital medical care to isolated communities.

Now Doctors for Nepal are looking for runners just like you to join their team and take up their final few charity places in Brighton Half Marathon (25 February 2018) and Brighton Marathon (15 April 2018). Join runners like Effie (pictured) and feel the pride in supporting such a special cause.
