Brighton rocks once again

12,000 celebrate 12th return of Brighton Marathon Weekend

With more than 12,000 participants and almost £2 million raised for over 300 charities, Brighton Marathon Weekend was back on top form on 9-10 April. Azure skies enhanced the fabulous sea views and after a blustery few days the coastal breeze died down to provide perfect racing conditions.

The vibrant Beach Village was busy from Friday morning (8 April) for race pack collections and Brighton Marathon Weekend got underway on Saturday with 1,400 youngsters taking part in the Mini Mile Races. The fastest times were naturally in the oldest age groups, where 16-year-old Alexander Riley, from Brighton, ran 4:47 and Amelia Cox (16, West Sussex) 5:14.

Sunday morning dawned with bright sunshine but pleasantly cool for the start of the BM10K and Brighton Marathon. First away was the shorter race with more than 2,673 finishers in 2:14:40. The course is slightly downhill from Preston Park to Madeira Drive, where the runners were met with huge crowds of cheering supporters.

Just missing sub-30-minute times were Ronny Wilson (Lincoln Wellington, 30:04) and Blake Moore (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow, 30:08 PB) in a terrific battle for the line. Jack Hutchens (Bideford, 30:38) was only a second outside his PB in third place.

Natasha Cockram (Micky Morris Racing Team, 33:29) missed her lifetime best by three seconds as she raced clear of 16:51 parkrunner Harriet Bloor (Lewes, 33:56 – debut) and Cassie Thorp (City of Portsmouth, 34:42) – see winner's smiles above.

Brighton Marathon followed the 10K competitors on a carefully re-measured course after an error had imposed an extra 568 metres on the entire field last year.  No such issues this year as the 12th running of this event was won by Alix Ramsier (South London Harriers, 2:29.08 PB) – pictured below – who had taken a decisive lead at 19 miles and hung on for victory by 18 seconds from Ben Holmes (Exeter, 2:29.26), with local man Will Green (Lewes, 2:30:02) taking the third rostrum spot.

Six women went below three hours and the top three were Melissah Gibson (Ealing Eagles, 2:51:07), Ania Gabb (Dacorum, 2:52:43) and Sarah Hanley (Kent AC, 2:56:01 PB). There were more than 8,500 finishers.

Lucy Greenhalgh, Marketing Manager UK and Ireland of ASICS, Brighton Marathon Weekend’s Official Footwear Partner, said: “What a fantastic event at the Brighton Marathon Weekend. ASICS has always believed in the positive impact of movement on the body and on the mind. Well done to everyone who took part over the weekend!”
