Quarter The Distance But All The Fun!
A popular Gloucestershire event will be back doing its bit for charity this September...
Entries are now open for for this year's Apperley Quarter Marathon which will take place on 22 September. The popular Gloucestershire event has been on the go for over 40 years and always raises a significant amount for the 'charity of the year' and for a variety of local community causes.
Organisers say: "This year we are raising funds for our main charity, Breast Cancer Now, my sister has had successful treatment for it so it is close to our hearts. We also support three local village community organisations providing much needed funds."
The charity-focused race is run over 6.55 miles (10.55K) around a varied course along local lanes and footpaths starting and finishing at the Cricket Club. There is also a Kiddython which raises funds for the local school, starts at 10:25ish and is approximately 1K.
The first edition took place in 1983, since then it has become an annual event. Its 40th anniversary was celebrated last year with over 400 people taking part. Anna Borthwick said after 2023's race: "As a first timer, great event, really well organised and great route. Loved my medal and piece of cake at the end!"
Catherine Chapman Hughes agreed: "Excellent organised event! Thank you all volunteers for the wonderful home made medals, water stops, cakes et al! Great to be part of a fab fundraiser, congratulations all involved!"
Why is the race so enduring? Organisers have this to say: "Thanks to the untiring efforts of the the local organising team, all the helpers on the day, the generosity of local landowners and event sponsors and of course the efforts of the runners themselves, the event continues to be a success after all these years. A large part of the local population is involved, participating, helping or cheering on the runners from the roadsides and the after event festivities at Apperley Cricket Club are enjoyed by all."
