York 10K celebrates 10th anniversary

The Asda Foundation York 10K celebrated its tenth anniversary in style on Sunday (5 August). Vociferous backing throughout the day, a course that incorporates some of the city’s most historic sites, plus thousands of runners raising money for local charities all played their part.

Close to 5,000 competitors made their way to Knavesmire Road for what turned out to be one of the most memorable events in the 10k’s history. From Knavesmire Road the course moved alongside York Racecourse and passed through some of the city’s many historic landmarks, including Clifford’s Tower and the Minster.

It turned out to be a relatively close affair at the front with Liverpool RC’s Jamie Rutherford on PB form to claim first in 32:49 – a welcome victory after second place finishes at Southport Half and Port Sunlight 10K in the previous two months. Leeds City AC’s Jake Callis also bagged a PB and second place in 33:00, while Callum Crawford of Exeter Harriers was right on his tail (33:02).

In the women’s competition, the evergreen Julie Briscoe put in an another excellent performance to take top spot in 35:54 – her fastest 10k time of the year. Peterborough’s Maggie Skinner (37:35) and Angela Joiner-Handy (39:55) were her closest competitors.

The day, however, was also a celebration of the event’s longevity and pride of place among Run For All’s 10k series, which includes races in Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, Nottingham, Leicester, King’s Lynn, Lincoln, Burnley and Bury.

Mandy Rivett, Asda Foundation co-ordinator, said: “It’s not hard to see why the Asda Foundation York 10K is so popular year after year; the beautiful city of York provides an incredible setting for the run and the crowds are so supportive. Well done to everyone, including the many Asda Colleagues, who crossed the finish line, especially those raising money for some fantastic charities.”
