Hull Marathon cancelled for the second year in a row

Covid-19 and engineering works stopped the event in its tracks

There were too many challenges to overcome for this year’s Hull Marathon & Relays and this has resulted in cancellation for the second year in a row. All is not lost however as the organisers will be holding a virtual marathon & relays in the autumn.

2020 will be remembered as the year when races were cancelled or rearranged because of Covid-19. The Hull Marathon & Relays was one of these races, originally scheduled for 27 September but the global pandemic caused it to be moved to September 2021 and fingers were crossed the event would go ahead.

Sadly it was not to be. The uncertainty with Covid-19 plus engineering works in and around Hull requiring roads to be kept open for hospitals, testing centres and vaccination centres meant it was no longer feasible and race director Lucas Meagor had to make a painful and disappointing decision. The event has been postponed to 2022.

Turning a negative into a positive, he has created a virtual marathon & relays to be held between 25 September and 3 October, providing runners with the opportunity to be part of it. The virtual event will also support 5 charity partners: Dove House Hospice, HER Breast Friends, Hull Animal Welfare Trust, Nurture A Child and P.A.U.L for Brain Recovery. There is the possibility of an alternative event in addition to this.

There will be a pent-up demand for city marathons in the post-pandemic world and in the words of Lucas Meagor: “Hull Marathon will be back in 2022 and when we return, we will have a bigger and better event.”

More information about this can be found in an event update dated 31 January on the Hull Marathon & Relays website.
