Race Your Way
Sign up for the Hedgehog Challenge and add this colourful race bling to your medal haul...
If you like the look of this cute medal, there's still time to get your hands on one of your own with the Hedgehog Challenge all set for its 2024 outing in two weeks time. Organised by Big Bear Events, the timed challenge will take place on 24 January at Fineshade Woods near Corby.
The 3.5-mile off-road loop means your race can be 5K or even over 80K and anywhere in between, you decide how many laps you're going to do on the day within the 6-hour time limit. If you're looking to cover a marathon distance you'll need to complete seven laps (and a mini out and back) and a half marathon will be three laps (as well as an out and back).
Organisers say: "The 6 hour lapped event means it's your day - have a social plodding 10K or run as hard as you want for six hours. Pick a distance and hit it or stop for lunch before you pick the kids up (or start work!). It's your day!"
The Big Bear Challenges are a real social affair and allow all abilities of runner to run together (or hike/walk!). There is no pressure from those in charge, but they will always check if you want one more lap! The format is great for people looking to run further than they’ve ever done before, do a long training run for future events or to enjoy a sociable event with your friends.
95% of the route is a predominantly flat and beautiful woodland run. The whole route sticks to the main pathways and a few 'forest roads' meaning the ground conditions will be good compared to the majority of trails in January! The final 5% of each lap is up a considerable hill - the perfect kicker to finish off your effort!
Maybe you like the sound of the event itself, but you're not one who is swayed by the lure of a fancy medal or other 'extras' - in that case Big Bear Events partnership with Trees Not Tees may be of interest! When you sign up to this event you can select to have no finish line swag and instead they will donate the cost of this to Trees Not Tees who will plant a tree in their Scottish woodland on your behalf!
