Stebbing Remembrance Day 10 2024

Time To Remember At Stebbing

Remembrance Day 10 brings nearly 500 runners to this traditional Essex race...

The Stebbing Remembrance Day 10 has been running for 23 years. The latest iteration, on Sunday 9 November 2025, retained the tradition of observing a two-minute silence alongside the congregation of St Mary the Virgin Church at an open-air Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial on the village green.

The local Grange Farm and Dunmow Runners promote this Essex staple, with Nice Work handling the race management. The course is a challenging multi-terrain classic with some hills, some farm track, and four 'ends' – the route passing through Bran End, Church End, Duck End, and ... the end!

Once the respects had been paid to those who lost their lives fighting for the freedom we enjoy today, the race was underway at 11:02am. There is a £100 bonus for any new course records, but they remained in the hands of Paul Whittaker (Road Runners Club/Leigh on Sea Striders) with 50:48 in 2023, and Liz Davies (Springfield Striders), whose 58:01 was set in 2019.

The top three men broke the hour, with victory going to Steven Wherrett (Witham RC, 58:50). The only other sub-six-minute milers this year were Ben Ryder (Halstead, 59:10) and Alex Manton (Springfield Striders, 59:59).

Two women, both representing Springfield Striders, smashed 70 minutes on the undulating course, with an elevation gain of 130 feet. Nicole Funnell (1:02:55) was a clear winner from her clubmate Imogen Ovenden (1:09:29). Georgia Couzens (City of Southend AC, 1:10:25) completed the women's podium.

Stebbing Remembrance Day 10 has previously hosted the Essex 10-mile Championships and has won the Howard Williams Trophy as the best road race in the Essex Athletic Association area (2016 and 2017). This year's race saw 468 finishers in 2:21:44, with 250 of those under 90 minutes.
