Marcus and his Staffordshire bull terrier Fred were amongst a 900 plus strong field of runners at this multi-terrain run organised by the Rotary Clubs of Tamworth and Lichfield. With the goal of being the biggest charity event in Staffordshire the race has raised thousands of pounds for local causes which have received a further boost after yuesterday’s efforts.

Marcus Freeman, 45-year soldier from Rugeley was fundraising for Macmillan as his way of expressing his gratitude for the help and advice given during a very difficult period in his life. He faced a different kind of battle when his wife Dawn was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago. She is currently in remission and together with their daughter Charlotte was at the C2C Run to cheer Marcus and Fred on. He credits her recovery to the treatment and care provided by the medical staff along with support from the charity and that of family and friends who all helped them through this ordeal.

His four legged running mate wasn’t the only Staffie in town. He and Marcus were introduced to ‘Watchman’, the Staffordshire Regimental Association mascot and his handler Greg Hedges who were fundraising on behalf of St Giles Hospice.

Julian Ayres was first across the line at the Cathedral to Castle Run in 57:48. Elizabeth Watters won the women’s race in 1:04:25.

Marcus and Fred finished in 1:24:16.
