Sandhead 10 Mile

Sandhead Is A Scenic 10 Miler

Looking for an early autumn 10 miler? We've just the one!

If you're looking for a perfect warm up event for an autumn half marathon, such as the Great Scottish Run then the Sandhead 10 is a fantastic option. A ten mile multi-terrain race from Sandhead to Stranraer, this event showcases an often forgotten, but incredibly beautiful corner of Scotland.

Taking place on 17 September, the race utilises the last 10 miles of the Mull of Galloway Trail. Starting with a scenic run along the sands of Luce Bay before climbing onto the dunes giving great views across the beach.

About 6K in the route crosses onto the quiet back roads leading towards Stranraer - a good time to pick up the pace after those tricky dunes! A couple of farm fields and a woodland descent, and the route joins the Southern Upland Way for a short stretch. Organisers comment: "Don't confuse the signage, it's a long way across Scotland!"

Then is it into Stranraer with great views over Loch Ryan, and a run along the front, past the old ferry terminal, and the marina. A teasing loop around Agnew Park before finishing down the pier!

Designated one of Scotland’s Great Trails, The Mull of Galloway Trail is recognised for its stunning views in south-west Scotland. Stretching from Scotland’s most southerly point, it travels northward along the east coast of the Mull of Galloway heading for Stranraer. The lighthouse at the start was built in 1830 by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, the well know author of Kidnapped and Treasure Island.

It is generally good coastal path and well waymarked, there is no scrambling and no large ascents. The last six miles are in part on very quiet roads with little traffic. The trail is very scenic looking over Luce Bay and ending at Loch Ryan with views over Ailsa Craig and Arran in the distance.
