From Pentland Summit To Sandy Finish At Scurry To The Sea
Hilltop start, beach finish...
Few races can match the journey offered by Scurry To The Sea, a distinctive Scottish running challenge that begins high in the Pentland Hills and ends with a dash across the sand at Musselburgh beach.
Returning in 2026, the event covers just under 12 miles and combines hill running, trail sections, urban navigation and road running in a point to point adventure that showcases some of Edinburgh's most varied landscapes. Runners start at Hillend before tackling a short but demanding climb to the summit of Allermuir Hill, where panoramic views stretch all the way towards the East Lothian coastline and the sea beyond.
From there the route heads downhill, but there is still plenty of work to do. Unlike a traditional road race, competitors must navigate their own way between a series of mandatory checkpoints, choosing their preferred line through parks, woodland trails, cycle paths and city green spaces on the journey east.
The course passes through a variety of well known Edinburgh locations including the Hermitage of Braid, Craigmillar Castle Park and the paths around Duddingston before joining routes towards Musselburgh. The final section follows the Brunstane Burn towards the coast before runners reach the event's trademark finale, a compulsory scurry across the sand to the finish line beside the sea.
Part trail race, part navigation challenge and part urban adventure, Scurry To The Sea has built a loyal following thanks to its unusual format and memorable route. The mix of hill running, route choice and changing scenery means no two miles feel quite the same.
The event produced some impressive performances in 2025, with Linlithgow AC's Sam O'Neill setting the current men's course record of 1:08:02. The women's course record remains Rachel Normand's outstanding 1:24:17, set in 2018 while representing Carnethy Hill Running Club.
For runners looking for something a little different from the standard road race experience, Scurry To The Sea offers a memorable journey from hilltop to shoreline across the heart of Edinburgh.
