Run And Remember

600 ran to honour our fallen heroes...

This year's Remembrance Run Essex, organised by Active Training World, drew 600 runners to the World War II Debden Airfield at Carver Barracks, near Saffron Walden, on Saturday 9 November for a four-race programme comprising a Family Fun Run, 5K, 10K, and half marathon.

The event raised funds for the military charity, the Felix Fund Bomb Disposal Charity which assists with the well-being of individuals within the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Search Community across the British military.

The consistent pressure of these roles can lead to devastating consequences affecting all aspects of their lives, both physically and mentally, and the Felix Fund is there to provide welfare support and financial assistance to serving personnel, veterans, and their dependents.

Despite the poignancy of the occasion, there was still fun to be had (see above) and a superb poppy-inspired medal to be claimed (see below). The course is flat and aircraft-shaped, utilising the former runway and taxiways of the disused airfield.

The 2024 half marathon champions were Liam Butler (1:17:20) and Carol Carter (1:35:10). There were 136 finishers inside three hours. The 10K was contested by 215 runners – all home in just over 90 minutes – with the fastest being Gareth Carey (34:07) and Sharon Wright (40:26).

Dropping down to 5K, the leaders were Max Godfrey (16:18) and Harriet McCart (19:21) as 133 finished in less than 50 minutes. The Family Fun Run Mile had opened proceedings at 9:30am and the first finishers were Francisco Novo Matos (6:01) and Martha Switzer (7:06).
