Runners Get On Track

This track event promises a lively morning of competition and a chance for runners to push their limits over a classic endurance format...

Runners looking for a different kind of challenge are being invited to test their pacing and mental focus at the Dumfries Running Club One Hour Track Race. The event returns for its third edition on 30 May at the David Keswick Athletics Centre in Dumfries. Organisers say the race offers a unique opportunity for runners to see just how far they can go in 60 minutes on the track.

Two races will take place during the morning to cater for a wide range of abilities and experience levels. The Novice race is aimed at runners who want to try a one-hour time trial for the first time or simply enjoy the challenge of extending their race effort to a full hour. The Masters race will follow and is designed for experienced athletes targeting official UK best performance marks in their age categories.

Competitors will start each race with a whistle and have exactly one hour to complete as many laps as possible. Officials will record the number of laps completed along with any additional distance covered once the hour ends. A bell will ring at the 59 minute mark to signal the final minute before runners must stop and have their finishing position measured.

The format provides a different test compared with traditional road races. With the entire event taking place on the track, runners must manage their pace carefully and maintain concentration throughout the hour. At the same time, the lap format allows spectators and fellow competitors to offer plenty of encouragement, with cowbells expected to ring out as the final minute approaches.
