Running In The Land O’ Burns

Run in Burns' backyard at this springtime 10K...

Runners are preparing to return to the Ayrshire coast for the popular Land O’ Burns 10K, a midweek race scheduled this year for Wednesday 20 May. Hosted by Ayr Seaforth AAC, the race will once again start and finish at Seafield Pavilion and is expected to attract runners from across the region.

The event offers a scenic west coast route that combines local history (courtesy of our National Bard, the race's namesake) with coastal views. A redesigned course introduced in 2024 will continue for this year’s race, providing competitors with a predominantly traffic free out and back route.

Runners will follow a section of the old Butlins railway line and pass through the Dunure Road tunnel before heading back towards the finish. The course is considered relatively flat with gentle inclines and descents, making it accessible for runners of all abilities while still offering the potential for fast times.

More than 200 runners took part in the 2025 edition. Victory in the men’s race went to Alastair Stables of Giffnock North AC, who crossed the line in 34:16. The women’s title was claimed by Katrine Kelly of Kilmarnock Harriers & AC in 39:47.

Organisers say they are also continuing efforts to make the event more environmentally friendly. "In order to reduce the race’s carbon footprint and help keep entry fees as low as possible, finishers will once again not receive t-shirts or medals. We have also moved away from single use plastic bottles, instead providing water at the course station and finish area using recyclable paper cups."
