Kids Run Too

Pentland Hill race returns this September with a fun new addition to proceedings...

The Harrison Hulme Hill Relays will be back on 14 September, with an exciting addition to the programme in 2025 – a free-entry kids race. Organised by Corstorphine Athletic Club, the event is now in its fourth year and takes place in memory of James Harrison and Martin Hulme.

Organisers say: "Both men had made Edinburgh their home and were passionate about hill running, generously sharing their experience and knowledge with friends. Their untimely passing inspired the creation of the relays, which have become a fitting annual tribute to their love of the Pentland Hills."

The main event follows the established format of a three-person relay, with each team member tackling the same 4.6K route featuring 261 metres of ascent. The course takes in two of James’ favourite Pentland routes – the climb up Capelaw Hill and the mile-long downhill dash along the much-loved ‘Scalextric’ trod. Described as fast but challenging, the race offers spectacular views and plenty of action for spectators gathered at the start-finish area.

For 2025, young runners can take part in a single-lap 2K race, open to all ages as long as they can complete the distance, with every finisher receiving a prize.

The race starts and finishes at the end of the ‘Scalextric’, a popular downhill section between Torduff Hill and the main path up from Bonaly car park. There are no facilities on site, so participants and supporters are advised to come prepared – and perhaps bring a flask of tea to enjoy while watching the drama unfold.
