Nigel Barge Memorial 10K Road Race

Nigel Barge Memorial 10K Road Race Set for mid-January date

Longstanding event honours memory of Second World War hero

Entries are still being taken for a challenging 10K road race honouring a West Coast war hero.

The Nigel Barge Memorial 10K Road Race commemorates the memory of Nigel Barge, a Royal Engineer who was killed in action at Dunkirk at the age of 23.

The talented officer, who helped prepare the defences around the Northern French coast, was also a member of the Maryhill Harriers – who have organised this event in his honour for over 70 years.

‘The Barge’, as the two-lap race is affectionately known, started out as a five-mile road race in January 1943. Over the years it has attracted some of Scotland’s top endurance runners to its start line.

Traditionally one of the first events of a new running year – unless the date clashed with the local cross-country held on New Year’s Day – the 2022 event will be held in Garscube on Sunday, 23 January.

Organisers Maryhill Harriers have announced that the 2022 event will be chip timed and feature a 3K Junior Fun Run for those aged 9–17.

They've also announced that the first male and female 10K runners to scale the 'Vet School Hill' will receive a bottle of whisky for their efforts.

The Nigel Barge Memorial 10K Road Race was last held in 2020. Shettleston Harriers claimed top spots on both the men’s and women’s podium, after wins by Lachlan Oates (31.44) and Kayleigh Jarrett (37.05).

Full results from the last running of the Nigel Barge Memorial 10K Road Race are available from runABC Scotland.
