Happy Running In The Valley
Runners seeking a spring challenge with serious elevation and rugged beauty need look no further than Happy Valley...
Runners looking for a true off-road test will once again descend on Bollington next spring as the Happy Valley Trails event returns on 10 May. Known locally for its demanding climbs and rugged terrain, the event has quickly established itself as one of Cheshire’s toughest trail fixtures since launching in 2022.
Originally debuting with the half marathon distance, the event expanded to include a 10K in 2023. Both races showcase the dramatic hills and valleys surrounding Bollington, offering a rewarding but uncompromising challenge for those ready to take it on.
The half marathon is the headline attraction and is far removed from a typical 13.1-mile outing. With approximately 770 metres of ascent, runners tackle Kerridge Ridge, Sponds Hill and a punishing final climb up White Nancy. The route begins with a steep ascent from Adelphi Mill before heading over to Harrop Woods and then up to the exposed high ground of Sponds Hill, where runners will need grit and determination to keep pushing. Organisers say: "Most runners can expect to finish around half an hour slower than they would on a flat half marathon."
The 10K option shares the same start and finish as the half marathon and still packs in 390 metres of climbing, including ascents of both Kerridge Ridge and White Nancy.
Both races offer a mix of farmland tracks, rocky descents and woodland paths, with sweeping views across Cheshire as a reward for the effort. All finishers will receive a bespoke wooden medal along with refreshments at the finish.
