Gender Equal Prizes At Top Hill Race

Scottish female hill runners will be encouraged by news that Invercharron Highland Games has introduced a gender equal prize structure for their event on Saturday 15 September, 2018.

The hill race which will take place at Balblair Farm near Bonar Bridge in Sutherland has a prize pot of over £1,000. Senior hill runners will be tempted by cash prizes for the first five places (£225, £100, £50, £30 and £20) in both male and female categories.

There are also valuable prizes for junior runners (aged 12-17).

Previously there was a £300 prize for the first runner home and smaller rewards for placed male and female runners.

The Invercharron Hill Race offers a challenging route which includes open meadow, forest track, woodland trails and a climb that follows the single track of the Balblair Mountain bike route. At the top, competitors are treated to spectacular views over the Kyle of Sutherland before heading downhill to the finish. Seniors will cover 8k and climb over 600ft with the juniors covering 6k and climbing 300ft.

Recent winners have included Robbie Simpson and Murray Strain while Alasdair McLeod (26:39) set the course record in 2014. Sheila Golan (34:20) posted the fastest time for a female runner in 2011.

Set on the North Coast 500 Route, the Invercharron Highland Games are popular with locals and visitors alike and attract an international audience.
