A Taste Of The Backyard

Is this your chance to experience some of what Backyard running has to offer?

Backyard Ultras have a reputation for being gruelling, relentless and unforgiving, but the Leeds Backyard Taster Event on 27 April offers runners a gentler introduction to the format - without the extreme commitment or hefty price tag.

Set in the stunning grounds of Temple Newsam, this event is the perfect gateway for those curious about Backyard running but unsure if they’re ready for the full challenge. Rather than continuing indefinitely until only one runner remains, this taster edition will span six yards over six hours, giving participants the flexibility to push themselves without the pressure of strict eliminations.

For those unfamiliar with the format, a traditional Backyard Ultra sees runners set off on a 4.167-mile (6.706K) loop every hour, with the event continuing until only one competitor remains. These races can last for days, making them both physically and mentally exhausting. The Leeds Backyard Taster, however, provides a more accessible experience while keeping all the excitement, camaraderie, and unique atmosphere that makes these events so special.

The provisional course promises a scenic mix of paths and trails, winding from the village on the hill down through the woodlands and riverside paths of Temple Newsam. Organisers say: "Expect mud, puddles and plenty of surprises along the way. We are keeping a few extra twists under wraps for now but promise this event will be something special."

Dubbed the spiritual successor to 2023’s ‘Backyard Mini’, this new event will deliver all the signature elements runners loved last time: top-tier support, incredible medals, great goodies, and a close-knit field of no more than 200 runners, creating an intimate and supportive race-day atmosphere.
