Runner at Coniston Fell Race 2025

Coniston Fell Race Is Open For Entries

For those with the experience and appetite for a demanding day on the fells, Coniston remains a true test and a date to circle in the 2026 calendar...

Entries are now open for the Coniston Fell Race, a classic Lake District challenge that returns on 2 May promising steep climbs, technical terrain and some top class ridge running.

Based at the Coniston Institute, the race covers 8.7 miles and packs in a formidable 1065 metres of climb. It is a true test of fell running skill and endurance, with rough ground in places, exposed ridges and a fast and often tactical final descent where line choice can make all the difference.

Organisers do stress: "Coniston is a race for experienced fell runners only. All entrants are required to have prior fell running experience and must be competent in using a map and compass to navigate accurately in the hills. As with all classic Lakeland races, competitors are reminded to be prepared for whatever conditions the mountains decide to deliver on the day."

The course has a rich history, with longstanding records that underline its challenge. The men’s record stands at 1:03:29, set by I Holmes in 1996, while the women’s record of 1:17:11 has been held by V Wilkinson since 2014.

The 2025 edition enjoyed near perfect conditions, with sunshine, clear skies and a refreshing breeze greeting a field of 264 runners. Jack Wright of Ambleside claimed the men’s title in an impressive 1:14:53, while Hannah Russell of Helm Hill took the women’s win in 1:25:42. Team honours went to Ambleside in the men’s race and Helm in the women’s competition.

Organised by the events manager at Pete Bland Sports, the Coniston Fell Race is as much an adventure as it is a competition, set against the dramatic backdrop of the southern Lake District fells. Adding extra motivation, all proceeds from race entries will be donated to the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team, supporting the vital work they do in the local hills.
