The Caerketton Downhill is a unique hill race organised by Carnethy Hill Running Club at Hillend on the southern edge of Edinburgh. Starting from the summit cairn of Caerketton, runners race downhill over 1.8K to the finish near the base of the ski slope. A shorter 0.8K junior race also takes place from a lower start.
The route follows steep hill paths, grassy ridges and fast descents with approximately 300 metres of descent. Runners start individually at 15 second intervals, creating a time trial style format that rewards confident descending and quick footwork.
The Caerketton Downhill is a popular and light hearted fixture in the Scottish hill running calendar. Its fast downhill course, friendly atmosphere and distinctive format make it a memorable challenge for experienced hill runners and newcomers alike.
