Chocks away for British Airways Run Gatwick
It's chocks away for British Airways Run Gatwick this Sunday (12 May). Race Director Dave Kelly is hoping more than 5,000 runners will assemble at Crawley's Southgate Park for the second running of this prestigious event, incorporating Sussex Half Marathon Championships.
Fresh from a world leading 22.26 to win the IAAF Diamond League 200m in Doha last week, Britain's sprint queen Dina Asher-Smith will act as race ambassador, official starter and star attraction for the inevitable post-race selfies.
Dina will be joined by former world record holder at 110m hurdles (12.91) and twice world champion Colin Jackson MBE, who was undefeated in 44 races between 1993 and 1995. The BBC athletics pundit was also runner-up to Darren Gough in Strictly Come Dancing in 2005!
The Run Gatwick route is completely traffic-free through parkland, town and countryside surrounding Gatwick Airport and capable of producing PB times. Last year's winners in the half marathon were Neil Boniface (Crawley, 1:09:00) and Hayley Manning (Clapham Chasers), who shared 1:27:34 with runner-up Amelia Brown (Crawley) in a terrific sprint finish. Just over 2,200 completed the course in 3:48:27.
Sussex Half Marathon Championships status will add some spice to the flagship event that starts at 9:00am. This will be followed by Run Gatwick 5K at 9:25am and the events will be concluded with the Family Run from 12:30pm.
British Airways Run Gatwick features a vibrant event village with live music and Vines BMW and Mini Kids Active Zone, with free kids activities including remote control electric cars, climbing wall, obstacle course and a mini golf course.
All finishers will receive an aviation-themed medal, technical T-shirt and running snood.
