Birchwood goes green for 2019

Spectrum Striders Running Club, organisers of the Birchwood 10K, have made a number of significant steps to ensure the upcoming event on Sunday 18 August is their most environmentally friendly to date.

As part of this drive, all finishers will receive recycled T-shirts and wooden medals with recycled plastic ribbons. Water tanks will be dotted along the course to allow competitors to fill them up their water bottles and all of the plastics used will be picked up post-race.

In advance of the event, runners are also being encouraged to share rides, with organisers teaming up with a car sharing website and inviting participants to meet prior to the race to travel together.

Speaking about the eco-friendly push, Graham Driver, race director, said: “The club is very proud of our efforts to create a greener race. We hope that runners who take part will get as much of a sense of achievement from knowing they are helping to reduce damage to the environment as they get from completing our fantastic race.”

Tracing back to 1984, the Birchwood 10K has ranked consistently high on the list of the UK’s top road races and is ideal for northern runners chasing a PB towards the end of their summer training. The race will see runners take on a circular route from Birchwood railway station, mainly on roads, through Birchwood and Croft, finishing in Birchwood Boulevard.
