9 Locks Challenge

Canals & Climbs

This summer challenge is more than just a race, it’s a great day out too...

Runners are gearing up for the 2025 9 Locks Summer 10K Challenge, taking place on 1 June along the picturesque Stourbridge Canal in the West Midlands. Organised by OP Events, this popular summer race offers a point-to-point course that combines a sense of history, a challenging climb and a festival atmosphere at the finish.

Starting from the Bonded Warehouse in Stourbridge, participants will follow a 10K route tracing the canal towpath towards Merry Hill, with the centrepiece of the course being the ascent of the famous Delph Nine Locks. This mid-race climb is both physically demanding and visually striking, offering runners a memorable challenge as they navigate a steep series of lock gates that connect two levels of the canal.

An event spokesperson said: “The locks section is what really sets this race apart. It’s where the race earns its name and reputation - it’s tough but incredibly rewarding. Once runners reach the top, they’ll enjoy a gentle descent and flat finish into the Brierley Hop House.”

The course takes runners across a mix of surfaces including gravel, mud and tarmac, adding an off-road element that appeals to trail runners as well as road racers looking for something different. With the route entirely traffic-free and chip-timed, organisers promise a safe and professionally managed event.

All finishers will be rewarded with a medal and goody bag to mark their achievement, while spectators can soak up the celebratory atmosphere at the Brierley Hop House, where food and refreshments will be on offer.
