His & Hers Races
Liverpool's Sefton Park will play host to two special 10K races this September...
As runABC previously reported, Liverpool Women's 10K will be staging a comeback in 2024 after many years of absence. Now the word on the street is that a Men's 10K will take place in Sefton Park on the same day (8 September) running immediately after the women's race.
A fantastic race setting, the magnificent 200-acre Sefton Park looks like a natural landscape rather than a man-made park and is arguably the best known and most loved by locals. The park features many distinctive curved paths and driveways and beech and other indigenous British trees abound. The park is also home to the famous Palm House, a fabulous glass-panelled building that has been restored to its former glory.
Race organisers, BTR Liverpool, say: "The Men's 10K is the perfect complement to the Women's 10K which has returned to the Merseyside sporting calendar after many years. The course is two laps of Sefton Park one on the outside and one on the inside and it promises to be a fast course in a fantasic setting."
Back in the 1980's the Women's 10K event was one of the very first women only events in the country and was hosted in Sefton Park by Liverpool City Council.
It was a race of its time - and it stood the test of time - until the running market began to change in the mid 1990's when women were becoming less intimidated by male dominated races and started to take part in open category events - not to challenge the men but to run alongside on an equal footing. The downside to this was that the 'women only' events were losing their appeal and over time participation numbers continued to drop.
Speaking about the comeback, BTR's Alan Rothwell told us: "In recent years there has been a resurgence in women only events so Liverpool is stepping up to bring back its very own Women's 10K once again."
