Trident 10K

Hills, Views & Homebaking

Head to Helensburgh this September for a trail race with lots to offer...

Runners looking for a scenic and satisfying late-summer challenge should mark their diaries for the second edition of the Trident 10K on 13 September. Organised by Helensburgh AAC, this off-road race might not be flat, but it more than makes up for the effort with stunning views and the club’s now-famous spread of home baking at the finish line.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Clyde, Arrochar Alps, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, the Trident 10K weaves its way along a 9.7K loop of trail and dirt roads, complete with 331 metres of climbing to test even the most seasoned hill runners. The route starts and finishes at Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Club, taking participants from open grass around the sports fields to single-track woodland paths and sharp, leg-burning climbs.

After a tough start (the first 2K alone climbs 129 metres) runners are rewarded with sweeping downhill stretches and the chance to really let the legs fly before circling back to the finish. The final return onto grass might sap any remaining strength, but the promise of the club’s legendary cakes and spot prizes makes for a sweet end to the day.

Alongside the main event, juniors aged 12 to 17 can also lace up for the ‘Duchess Dash,’ a 4K two-lap trail race set in the nearby Duchess Woods.

With its spectacular course and low entry fee, the Trident 10K has already earned plenty of love following its inaugural run in 2024. If the smiles and slices of home baking at the finish are anything to go by, this is a race destined to become a Scottish trail running favourite.
