Quirky Quarter Is Back!
If you’re looking for a race that’s fast, flat and just a little bit different, this one ticks all the boxes...
A quarter marathon might not be a standard race distance, but The Cambus Quarter has made it its own. Returning on 17 August and with places still available, this 6.5-mile mixed terrain event near Alloa offers a memorable route packed with charm, variety and just a touch of quirk.
Starting and finishing in the small village of Cambus, the course is a blend of riverside trails, tarmac paths, rural farmland and woodland, with runners passing Cambus Pools Nature Reserve and local landmarks like the Diageo distillery. The route is flat and fast and, while technically multi-terrain, organisers describe the race as a great fit for runners of all abilities. For beginners, the achievable distance offers a satisfying challenge. For more experienced athletes, it’s a chance to push the pace on a varied, scenic course.
In a unique twist, runners also pass a level crossing on the reinstated Alloa railway line. It’s not officially a train race, but those chasing a fast time may find themselves trying to beat the barriers and avoid a pause for the passing train.
The 2024 race saw nearly 120 runners take part, with Calum Little winning in 35:49 and Alison Berwick of RTC Warriors taking the women’s title in 44:27. With the promise of riverside scenery, a friendly atmosphere, and the odd locomotive cameo, the 2025 Cambus Quarter is sure to appeal once again to a wide range of runners.
