It's A Cracker!
This Christmas Cracker returns for a scenic, festive running challenge...
The Staffordshire Moorlands Christmas Cracker race is back on 6 December, bringing festive running fun to the heart of the Peak District. Organised by Staffordshire Moorlands AC, this long-standing event offers both a senior and junior race, making it a perfect seasonal outing for runners of all ages.
The main race covers approximately eight miles, with around 40% of the route on quiet country lanes and the rest following trails, fields and farm tracks. The highlight of the course is the spectacular stretch along the Roaches gritstone ridge, standing around 1,500 feet above sea level and offering breathtaking views across the Staffordshire Moorlands. The junior race covers a scenic two-mile loop around the trails of Tittesworth Water.
While the event attracts some strong club runners, the emphasis is very much on fun, with festive fancy dress highly encouraged. Past participants have donned Santa hats, tinsel halos and all manner of creative Christmas attire. All finishers receive a festive memento (either a pair of special edition socks or a locally bottled beer) and prizes are awarded across various categories, including fancy dress.
The event also gives back to the local community, with profits shared between charities and organisations that help to make the race possible, including the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, which maintains the Roaches footpaths, and Buxton Mountain Rescue, which provides support on race day.
Organisers told us about the post-race arrangements: "Runners and supporters alike can enjoy the excellent facilities at the Visitor Centre, where hot drinks and snacks will be available to help everyone warm up after tackling the hills."
