Run Sandringham lift off

Royal Rumble In Norfolk

20,000 acres of space for runners to enjoy in Sandringham Estate...

Last weekend runABC news writer Alan Newman was enjoying a stroll in the Royal Sandringham Estate – home for generations of British monarchs since 1862 and the much-loved country retreat of the late HRH Queen Elizabeth II – when he spotted the signs were up for Run Sandringham 2023 this Sunday (18 June 2023).

Having been reminded of this runABC featured event, and the fact he had missed the opportunity to run in either the Run Sandringham Half Marathon, Run Sandringham 5K or Community Mile, Alan decided to preview the event for the privileged participants who will be racing through the immaculate Royal Estate on Sunday.

The inaugural Good Running Events organised Run Sandringham in 2021 saw around 1,400 finishers in the three-race programme on a soggy Sunday morning in Norfolk. Last year there were 1,260 finishers in 3:51:35 in the Sandringham Half Marathon and 320 ran the supporting Sandringham 5K, finishing in 1:06:54.

The reigning Run Sandringham Half Marathon champions are M40 David Hudson (Huntingdonshire AC, 1:11:24) and Tri-Anglia triathlete Lindy-Lee Folscher (W40, 1:25:48). The fastest 5K runners were Callum Stanforth (Ryston Runners, 16:50) and talented under-17 prospect Ellie Loosley (Cambridge & Coleridge AC, 19:08).

Our correspondent can report the roads and woodland trails throughout the 20,000-acre estate are in pristine condition and the weather forecast is good, with some cloud cover and around 22C predicted. It looks like the event is a total sellout and the Event Village opens at 7:30am, so get there early to soak up the atmosphere before the 5K starts at 9:00am and the half marathon goes off an hour later.
