A Landmark Half Marathon
'Just be kind', says London Landmarks Half Marathon first timer Peter...
At the risk of sounding all Ant and Dec, welcome to the London Landmarks Half Marathon where you don't just see the landmarks, you become them!
Yes, the London Landmarks Half Marathon (LLHM), organised by Tommy's charity, encourages its participants to dress as their favourite sights on the route that starts by Pall Mall, finishes by Downing Street, and passes Nelson’s Column, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Walkie Talkie, Monument, Tower of London, London Eye, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
The main event was preceded by the popular 'Mascot Dash' - see photo above.
The 2024 medal is a thing of beauty and a design masterpiece. It features the iconic Trafalgar Square in incredible detail, revealing the historic Nelson’s Column, the fountains, and the resident lions. The medal hinges open to reveal an intricate design of the route along with all the major landmarks.
This year's LLHM, on Sunday 7 April, saw a terrific 18,870 runners officially finishing in 14:27:23. The top three men were Nen Leaman (1:09:02), David Smale (1:09:46) and Nick Harris-Fry (1:12:16). The leading women were Kate Moulds (1:22:06), Tabitha Woodhouse (1:23:14) and Lisa Nottingham (1:24:51) – who all finished in the top 100.
Nearly 300 achieved the 90-minute benchmark and more than 5,200 took less than two hours despite stopping for a few selfies en route. This brief highlights video captures the race day atmosphere...
But we can't do any better to describe the ethos of this great event than by sharing this Facebook post from Peter James (M60, 2:05:57) who finished 6,877th: "This was my first London Landmarks Half Marathon. Running it was amazing but what got me was the support. We see and hear so much negativity that certain men and women thrive on. At this event, I saw all of us at our best. People cheering and supporting strangers, people helping people on their way, be that by a shout to a runner or medical assistance. There was DJ’s, choirs, brass bands, and a drummer to help us on our way.
"I haven’t seen a word of this on the news or in national newspapers. Just remember we are all amazing and all the negativity in this world can be cancelled out so many times over by the love and support humans show, it’s just not reported. Just be kind. Thank you LLHM".
The LLHM 2025 will take place on Sunday 6th April. To pre-register click here.
