Fastest In The North (East)
There were some fast times at the weekend's Heaton Harriers Memorial 10K...
Close to 500 runners took part in Sunday's (November 13) Heaton Harriers Memorial 10K where morning fog lifted to allow for conditions on the town moor that were near perfect, this was evidenced in some fantastic times being achieved across the board.
Overall winner of the 10K was Adrian Bailes of Birtley AC who ran a fantastic time of 30:32. Providing a brilliant contest, just three seconds behind in second place was Jarlath McKenna of Bristol & West AC. Completing the top three was Connor Marshall of Morpeth Harriers in 31:48. The overall female winner was Kate Maltby of Bristol & West AC in a time of 35:28 while Amy Fuller of Tyne Bridge finished in second place and Jacqueline Penn of North Shields Poly taking third.
First Heaton Harrier home for the club and in fifth place overall was Fred Davies in a time of 32.20 while first Heaton Harrier female home for the club was Ellie Reed in a time of 40:02. A course record was also broken with Holly Waugh of North Shields Poly breaking the 5K record in the U20 womens race by over 30 seconds. The record now stands at 17:47, not only was the record broken but Holly now holds the course records for U15, U17 and U20 races!
Speaking after the event, organisers said: "As ever, huge thanks to all the volunteers on the moor and in race HQ without which we could not hold an event of this size each year. From lead bike to tail running to marshalling to number handouts, signups, results, cake stall sales and general tidy up and odd jobs, you are all fantastic and we’re proud you’re part of the Heaton Harrier family.
"Thank you also to every single person that ran yesterday, the 1 minute silence was impeccably held and we had some great feedback about the marshals and medals. We had representation from Dublin, Bristol, Edinburgh and Sheffield as well as runners from every single North East club."
