The Drop Manchester is organised by Organic Adventure and offers 6, 10 and 15 mile navigation challenges with no predetermined route. Participants begin at the event centre in central Manchester before being transported blindfolded to an undisclosed drop location.
The 10 and 15 mile options place runners the stated distance from the event centre as the crow flies. With no maps, GPS, compass or other navigation aids permitted, participants must choose their own route back on foot, meaning the distance actually covered will be longer. The 6 mile challenge follows the same principle but is restricted to entrants without local knowledge.
Electronic devices and navigation aids are handed over at registration, while participants carry a sealed emergency bag. GPS trackers are provided for safety and can also allow friends and family to follow progress. The unusual format makes route choice, navigation and decision making as important as running speed.
