Surrey 10 Champs On Sunday
The Dorking Tens will be a breeze for long-serving Race Director John Jelly...
The Dorking Tens are on this Sunday (4 June) and once again incorporate the Surrey Ten Mile Road Race Championships. This will be the 37th running of the Dorking Tens, hosted by the Dorking and Mole Valley Athletics Club from the Race HQ at Dorking Rugby Football Club.
This runABC South featured event includes the main 10-mile race and the more recent addition of the Cockerel 10K, with parking on the Big Field, Kiln Lane, Brockham (RH3 7LZ).
Both races start on Brockham Green, right in front of a handy watering hole – the Inn on The Green – just about perfect for supporters. The 10-mile course is a clockwise, two-loop affair with a time cut-off point at one-third race distance that must be reached within 40 minutes or runners will be directed to take a shortcut to the finish!
The 10K is a single lap based on the 10-mile circuit and both routes are on quiet lanes through the scenic Surrey countryside. Wheelchair and disabled athletes are positively encouraged and this is a race for all standards with a history of fast times at the front.
The 10-mile route changed in 2007 and the men's course record is 51:11 by Phil Wicks of Belgrave Harriers in 2017 despite a great run from Jonathan Cornish (Hercules Wimbledon, 51:13) in 2021. The current course record for women is 58:46 set in 2015 by Georgie Bruinvels (Aldershot, Farnham & District) although Julia Bijl (Clapham Chasers) was just a second short when she ran 58:47 last year.
Andy Coley-Maud (Guildford & Godalming AC, 51:40) is the defending Surrey men's champion and Emily Wicks (Aldershot, Farnham & District, 60:01) holds the women's Surrey crown.
Last year's Cockerel 10K – the race name reflecting the event logo – was won by Elvedin Bektic (Clapham Chasers, 37:11) and Kate Carter (Wimbledon Windmilers, 39:20) from 119 finishers in 1:35:45 and there were 354 who escaped the guillotine in the 10-miler in a little over two hours.
Race Director John Jelly is celebrating the safe return of his daughter Lisa Jelly who has just climbed Mount Everest, so organising the 37th Dorking Tens should be a breeze in comparison!
