It Wasn't Half A Challenge!
Flying Farmer aces local trail half marathon...
Dirt Half Challenge is a popular off-road half marathon race that traverses the picturesque countryside of Bedfordshire. Competitors encounter a variety of terrains, including muddy tracks, woodland trails, and canal towpaths making it a challenging yet rewarding race for all.
The 2024 race on Saturday 16 November saw 509 finishers led by Leighton Buzzard Triathlon Club's Jamie Farmer, who was victorious with a remarkable time of 1:18:41. Conditions were good this year although no one could get within five minutes of the flying Farmer.
The runners-up were Matt Clements (Marshall Milton Keynes AC, 1:23:40) and M40 master Sam King (Redway Runners, 1:24:28) as 11 men finished under 90 minutes.
Just over that threshold was Ellie Baverstock (Harborough AC, 1:31:42) who claimed the top woman's prize in an impressive 12th overall. W50 masters Dawn Godwin (Maidenhead AC, 1:35:49) and Jennifer Sangster (Redway Runners, 1:37:02) were the experienced runners who completed the women's podium.
Dirt Running has been organising the popular Dirt Half Challenge for 15 years. The race starts in the historic market town Leighton Buzzard. Runners complete a lap of Tiddenfoot Waterside Park before following the Grand Union Canal towpath to Stoke Hammond, with stunning autumnal views. The route then climbs through beautiful countryside to Great Brickhill, passing through scenic Rushmere Country Park woodland before following Greensand Ridge to the finish via the towpath and a final lap of Tiddenfoot Waterside Park.
The event drew runners from across the region and many of them praised the scenic route, well-marked course, supportive volunteers, and friendly atmosphere. Also coming in for some love was the awesome Dirt Half Challenge medal, pictured below in its natural environment!
A final word from Race Director Andy Hully: “Feedback from the runners regarding the course, support from the marshals, and the organisation was once again outstanding, with many runners vowing they would be back next year. A word of advice: enter early!”
