Chester 10K Shines To Survive Snow

Nearly 2,000 runners took to the streets of Chester to compete in the inaugural Chester 10K road race on Sunday (4 February). The event was one of very few survivors on a weekend in which races across the country were forced to cancel or reschedule for later in the year.

Organised by Active Leisure Events, the team behind the highly successful Chester Marathon, Metric and Half Marathon races, the 10k started at the Northgate Arena, headed out to Mollington and returned to town via Northgate Street to a noisy reception from the crowds at the Town Hall square finish.

Charlie Hulson ensured the first winner of the Chester 10K would also set a difficult to beat course record with the Liverpool Harrier crossing the line first in 29:58. Preston Harriers’ Andy Benson (31:44) and Vale Royal’s Christopher Perry (31:53) were his closest competitors.

Reflecting on his victory, Hulson said: “It’s a great course with lots of encouragement from spectators and volunteers. I am proud to be the winner of the first race and excited to have set the initial course record.”

Eleanor Davis of Bristol & West prevailed in a close contest with Danielle Hodgkinson, with the former finishing (34:52) just six seconds to spare to secure first in the women's race. Southport Waterloo AC’s Amanda Crook took third in 35:49.

Many of those taking part were running for charity, with a host of runners raising funds for the race’s official partner, Claire House Children’s Hospice. Sophie Chilvers, Running and Challenge Fundraiser at Claire House said: “Claire House are grateful to all running for us in the Chester 10K. We are lucky that so many people within the local community are pounding the streets of Chester to support their local children’s hospice.”
