New parkrun for Aberdeenshire
Castle Woods parkrun launches in Aboyne with bagpipes, sunshine and lots of smiles...
A brand new chapter in Aberdeenshire’s running community began on 17 May as Castle Woods parkrun officially launched in the picturesque village of Aboyne. The much-anticipated event saw 93 enthusiastic participants for its inaugural outing over a scenic, two-lap trail run through ancient Scots Pine woodland starting under the old Deeside Railway bridge.
Castle Woods' local charm was front and centre on launch day and the morning began with the stirring sound of live bagpipes echoing through the woods - there was an undeniable buzz of excitement as the event got underway.
The community came together in full force, with a dedicated volunteer team delivering a seamless event full of smiles, encouragement and high spirits. Among the 93 finishers was Andrew Saunders of Paddock Wood AC in Kent, who clocked a lightning-fast 17:13 to become the course’s first ever finisher. First woman across the line was Elaine Murdoch, in a time of 21:59.
Volunteer and attendee John Elrick summed up the spirit of the day: “It’s a beautiful route and the team of volunteers are so friendly and encouraging. It’s well worth a visit and we’ll certainly be back.”
Post-run coffees will be readily available at a number of local spots including The Cornerhouse Café, Spider on a Bicycle, The Black Faced Sheep and The Boat Inn - all ready to welcome the newest parkrun community.
