Callum Hawkins heads for Fukuoka Marathon

Callum Hawkins returned to race action at Valencia Half Marathon on Sunday (28 October). The Kilbarchan AC endurance ace clocked 1:01:00 to finish in 16th place in a contest which had attracted a world class field.

That top class field produced a dramatic result when Abraham Kiptum broke the tape on 58:18 to set a new world record. The Kenyan athlete took five seconds off Zersenay Tadese's previous world best which had stood for 8 years.

Ethiopia’s Jemal Yimer finished second in 58:33 (now third fastest on the all-time list) and eight men finished in under the hour mark.

Yesterday Callum followed up his Valencia appearance by announcing that he would be heading to Japan in early December to compete at Fukuoka Marathon. He tweeted: "Cant wait to return to Japan and hopefully set another PB there."

Replying to this message Adrian Stott noted: "Great news. Beyond the PB, Allister Hutton's Scottish record of 2:09:16 beckons within touching distance too."
