Brighton 10K 2018

Weekend fixtures are dominated by 10K races

Brighton 10K is cancelled but opportunity knocks for fans of the distance

A quick check of runABC South's comprehensive race listing for this weekend reveals at least a dozen events at the hugely popular 10K distance, plus one high-profile cancellation.

The Brighton 10K was held for the 36th time in 2019, regularly attracting up to 4,000 runners to the fast, flat seafront course. Record times of 28:59 by Rob Denmark and 32:31 by Caryl Jones are testaments to the quality of athletes who have won this iconic race over the years.

Storm Angus obliterated the 2016 race and the last run in 2019 saw 1,500 finishers in a race won by Brighton Phoenix athletes Finn McNally (30:23) and Beth Kidger (34:17). Perhaps the Brighton 10K will rise from the ashes like the mythical phoenix but meanwhile, we are spoilt for choice with a wide selection of the metric marvel distance this weekend.

On Saturday 20 November the ubiquitous stepping stone between parkrun and half marathon is available at Spider Hill, Aldershot; Battersea Park and QEOP, London and Poole, Dorset.

All of those events have their qualities but our writer, Alan Newman, might have been keen on a run in the last of the 2021 G3/Fitstuff Series at Newlands Corner, Guildford, having recently spent time training in the Surrey Hills AONB. A peek at this promo video will explain why...

Instead of ploughing through the sand on the North Downs Way in Surrey, our roving reporter will line up alongside 220-plus 'mature' runners, all of whom old enough to know better, in the British Masters 10K Championships at Gravesend Cyclopark in Kent. Four hilly laps and cambered bends on a cycle racing circuit without a bike – what could possibly go wrong?

Elsewhere there are 10K races included in programmes at Wendover and Radnage in Buckinghamshire plus Southampton Common and there are bespoke 10K events listed at Hampton Court Palace; Castle Combe, Wiltshire; Crowborough, Sussex; Watford and Chelmsford.

In fact, it's hard to avoid the 10,000m challenge wherever you are this weekend.

We think it's likely that at least one of our reports next week will be on a 10K race!
