West Lothian's famous shale oil industry helped shape the communities and landscape between West Calder and Winchburgh. On Sunday 6 December, runners will have an opportunity to explore that history on foot when Lothian Running Club stages its annual Shale Trail races.

The event follows the West Lothian Shale Trail, a waymarked route linking communities once central to Scotland's pioneering oil industry. Rather than simply offering another trail race through attractive countryside, the course takes runners along old railway paths, riverside trails and sections of the Union Canal, connecting the area's industrial past with its present day green spaces.

There are four ways to take part. The 9K provides an introduction to trail running between West Calder and Livingston, while the 25K continues all the way to Winchburgh. Three runners can share that longer journey in a relay, tackling legs of approximately 9K, 6K and 10K. The middle section includes a steep climb from the River Almond towards the Almondell Viaduct.

For those wanting considerably more mileage, the 50K ultra doubles the adventure with a journey from Winchburgh to West Calder and back. Starting at 7am in December darkness, competitors will need head torches before daylight arrives. The route is relatively sheltered and low lying, with GPS tracking provided and an eight hour time limit.

Organised by Livingston based Lothian Running Club, the event also supports Smalls for All, a charity helping people experiencing poverty and hardship. Entry fees range from £15 for the 9K to £35 for the ultra, with relay teams paying £45.

Entries close on 22 November, giving runners time to choose their challenge. Whether it's nine kilometres or fifty, this is an opportunity to discover a fascinating piece of Scottish history while putting some winter miles in the legs.
