The Shale Trail Races take runners through the heart of West Lothian, following a route that links the area's industrial heritage with its countryside. The event follows the historic Shale Trail between West Calder and Winchburgh, passing through woodland, former mining communities and stretches of the Union Canal.
There are four options to choose from: 9K, 25K, 50K and a three person 25K relay with legs of 9K, 6K and 10K. The routes follow a mixture of woodland paths, trails and canal towpaths, with some muddy sections and climbs along the way. The 50K takes runners along the full trail and back, while the shorter distances provide opportunities to explore different sections of the route.
All races are chip timed, with marshals and checkpoints providing support along the course. Every finisher receives a memento, and the event also supports the Scottish charity Smalls for All. With its varied distances, historic surroundings and welcoming atmosphere, the Shale Trail Races bring runners together for a winter challenge across West Lothian.
