The Big news from London Marathon Events (LME) is that The Big Half 2022 will take place on Sunday 4 September. This will be the second successive year that The Big Half will be held in the latter part of the year, rather than its original March date.
The 2021 event took place on Sunday 22 August with 3,500 participants and victories for Jake Smith (Cardiff, 1:02:06) and Charlotte Purdue (Aldershot, Farnham & District) in a new course record 1:09:51 to claim her third Big Half title – the first athlete to achieve that milestone.
Hugh Brasher, Event Director for The Big Half, said: “We believe this new place in the calendar allows the event to develop further. Having contended with the ‘Beast from the East’ in 2019, Storm Jorge in 2020, and Covid-19 in 2021, this new September date should ensure the wonderful community elements of the event, including The Big Festival and The Little Half, will flourish and grow further".
The Big Half was first held in 2018 and the event is also an inclusive community campaign called #WeRunAsOne to demonstrate how sport and community can come together to inspire social change and improve health and wellbeing.
Hugh Brasher added: "The Big Half is a wonderful celebration of London’s diversity, featuring communities and groups of all ages and abilities from the four host boroughs of Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets participating in a range of events from a free family event over one mile right up to the half marathon distance".
The Big Half is a world-class mass participation event, organised by London Marathon Events, over the half marathon distance (13.1 miles). Since 1981 the London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded grants totalling in excess of £93 million to almost 1,500 projects in London and across the UK.
The Big Half starts by Tower Bridge and finishes alongside the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. Entries are not yet open but participants can register their interest at the official website and will be notified when entries open.
