Robbie Simpson First At Big Aberdeen 10K

Commonwealth Games star Robbie Simpson took advantage of good running conditions yesterday in Aberdeen to score a comfortable victory in the BHGE 10K. The 27-year-old bronze medallist on the Gold Coast led a 3,000 field and broke the tape on 30:59 over two minutes ahead of Shettleston Harrier Darren Thom (33:16) with Michael Carroll (Perth Road Runners) a close-up third in 33:22.

Fiona Brian (35:11) improved her 2017 time by over a minute to retain the women's title and it was an all Metro-Aberdeen podium with teammates Clair Bruce (37:13) and Virginie Barrand (37:31) taking second and third places.

The field closed on 2:34:27 and the mid-point runner was Veronika Skupilova in 56:48.

Runners at Aberdeen's premier spring event enjoyed favourable conditions - cool and overcast - with slight winds the only downside. Seaviews and good spectator support kept runners' minds off of the hard work and, later, the undulations and twists on the second half of the course.

Post-race runners praised a well-organised event - efficient bag drop and toilet provision - and gave good marks to the medal, T-shirt and goody bag.
