Purbeck Marathon

The world's most scenic marathon?

Nice Work race management reckons the Purbeck Running Festival Marathon might be the most scenic 26-miler in the world. Certainly, the stunning Jurassic Coast provides a wonderful backdrop for the event, which is part of the Purbeck Outdoor Weekend on 14-15 September.

Purbeck Marathon has been successful for several years and with the added nous of Nice Work the race card has been extended to cater for all interests. Runners can choose distances to suit from a 54-mile ultra to the Purbeck 3-miler. In between there is the well-established Purbeck 16 and new Purbeck 6 as 'lighter' introductions to the tough world of trail running.

Swanage, Purbeck and the entire World Heritage site of the Jurassic Coast has spectacular landscapes and views. Not surprisingly, Purbeck Marathon has been rated in the top three in the UK for the past three years. The course, with more than 2,000 feet of climbing, provides for a predominately off-road race that is both challenging and rewarding.

Nice Work extras this year include a large, bespoke medal for all finishers; technical T-shirt for all ultra and marathon finishers (can be purchased for £8 for other races); goody bag for all finishers in the ultra, marathon and 16-miler; well stocked aid stations for the longer races with a selection of sweets and local treats and an event village with bar, BBQ and music.

Purbeck Marathon champions last year were Jacek Cieluszecki (Bournemouth, 3:00:20) and Becky Atkinson (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow, 3:35:31) and there were 198 finishers in 7:44:10. Purbeck 16 was won by Paul Gardiner (Chippenham Harriers, 1:58:48) and Tessa Strain (Highgate Harriers, 2:09:36) as nearly 200 finished just inside five and a half hours.

There are even mountain biking and Nordic Walking activities during this all action weekend.

The Event HQ is situated in the delightful sounding Sandpit Field, Swanage in Dorset, close to the Swanage Steam Railway.
