Portobello Beach Race

Sandy Toes In September

Head to the east coast for a fantastic autumn beach race this September...

What could be better than a trip to seaside for a scenic race followed by some ice cream or perhaps a nice box of fish and chips? Well, if the thought appeals why not consider this autumn's Portobello Beach Race which will take place in the East Lothian town on 8 September.

The race takes place entirely on the sand and is around four miles in length. Runners head out east along the beach, turn at a marker at the pumping station at the Joppa end, run back along the whole length of the beach to turn round a marker below the Cat and Dog Home with the finish line back where they started.

Organisers, Portobello Running Club say: "The race is timed to coincide with near low-tide. You will have to either climb over the groynes or be prepared to run round the seaward end - you may get your feet wet!"

All net sales proceeds raised from the race will be donated to Towerbank Primary School in Portobello to support equal access for all children to extra-curricular activites and there will be a Kids' Fun Run on race day starting at 10am.

Those taking part will find water, snacks and a cake stand at the finish. Portobello promenade has a number of cafes and restaurants to let you have a proper day out at the seaside.

In 2023 over 60 runners took part with George Kelly claiming victory in 25:36 while first female was Sarah Kyle in 34:02. If you'd like to know more, visit the Portobello Running Club website.
