Fancy Racing In The Dark?
T-shirts at teatime; medals at midnight. Is night running your thing?
Ever since the clocks went back at the end of last month we seem to be obsessed with running in the dark. For many it's an absolute necessity to train after work – or early doors before the ankle-biters are buzzing around – but now there's a growing enthusiasm for competing after nightfall.
Run In The Dark, in London's Battersea Park on Wednesday 15th November, was sold out well before the closing date and more than 800 set off at 8:00pm for two laps (5K) or four laps (10K) from the Bandstand on Central Avenue – full results via the runABC South race listing here.
Run In The Dark London is one of five flagship events worldwide that sees 25,000 people running with distinctive flashing red armbands for those who can only dream of being able to walk – raising funds for charity partner Collaborative Cures, bringing people together with the aim to cure paralysis in our lifetime.
On Thursday 16 November the Rogue Runs Severn Bridge 5 Night Race took place from The Underpass, utilising the traffic-free pedestrian accessways on the River Severn crossing from Wales to England and back. Our image above shows the runners assembling for the start and the awesome warm-up with Sal before the race.
This weekend the shining example is the runABC featured Supernova 5K London on Saturday 18 November – previewed in runABC South here – in the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, which was purpose-built for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Other night events that are spotlighted in runABC South's comprehensive race listing for this Saturday include Bath Skyline Night Run November 10K at University of Bath, Somerset; Dark Valley Half Marathon at Moors Valley Country Park, Ringwood, Dorset; Maverick Exposure Lights Dark Castle trail runs from Corfe Castle, Wareham, Dorset and the Burrator Noir 12 mile trail and 10K road race based at Burrator Reservoir Discovery Centre, Yelverton, Devon.
