Mortimer Forest Races Back In 2024
After a five year break, trail racing is back in Mortimer Forest...
The Mortimer Forest Trail Race is back after a five year hiatus with organisers, Ludlow Runners, inviting all trail lovers to join in the fun on 15 December where they are promising 'a fresh take on this iconic race'. Not least because there will be two distances on offer - 10 mile (ish) and 4 mile (ish), organisers say: "It’s rough and off-road, of course measurement are 'ish'!"
The 10 mile race is set in the beautiful Mortimer Forest on the Herefordshire/Shropshire border. A challenging course held in the depths of winter, it includes the infamous Big Dippers, but after a stiff climb up to the top of High Vinnalls, runners will be treated to a wonderful downhill finish, with views across the Welsh Marches, as far as the Malvern Hills and Brecon Beacons.
The shorter 4 mile course omits the Big Dippers and sticks to larger tracks, but still includes a trip up High Vinnalls with its far reaching views and cracking descent. For both races you can expect mud, hills and wonderful trails.
The race will be supporting Friends of Mortimer Forest and Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, with donations going to support the work they do in the forest. Organisers comment: "Ludlow Runners are very fortunate to have Mortimer Forest as our stomping ground, but we are very aware of the impact hundreds of feet have on the ecosystems.
"To bring this race to you, we have worked with Forestry England to reduce our impact, and are grateful to the works of The Friends of Mortimer Forest and Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, who help to maintain this beautiful piece of countryside."
